Live Above the Stables in Kenwood: 4935.5 S. Greenwood

A 3-bedroom coach house just came on the market at 4935.5 S. Greenwood in Kenwood.

Designed by Daniel Burnham, the 4400 square foot residence has a 3 bedroom apartment on the second floor and stables and a former carriage area on the first floor. The listing says it could be additional living space or kept as a studio.

The listing also says that many of the original elements of the 1887 structure have been left intact but we can’t see that because there are no interior pictures available.

The coach house is on a 57×78 lot.

I couldn’t find any other information about the property but it’s certainly at the rear of 4935 S. Greenwood.

If anyone has gone in it or goes in it- please chime in.

Could this be a great opportunity for an artist residence?

Robert Sullivan at Urban Search has the listing. See the listing here (front picture of the coach house only).

  1. So does this mean that there is a shared driveway? There are no alleys in this part of Kenwood.

  2. I like this place for the uniqueness and the history it holds. but it is kenwood, its 500k, and from the outside picture it needs some TLC.

i wonder what shape the rest of the place is in, cause 500k can go long ways in HP/kenwood area.

  3. Sheridan B, exactly my thought– check out the satellite view, and the picture is not pretty (not only a shared driveway, but no real space or “lawn” between the massuh’s house, and the coach house).

    Architectually, very cool.

And I admit I have a major (completely irrational) fixation on coachhouses– especially “real” ones like this. Love them.

But I don’t think it should even be legal to sell a unit like this as a separate structure. They may be able to get around the legal issue with an easement on the driveway. . .

But, seriously, if “the people at the house” leave their car in the drive, you’re going to have to ask them to move it if you want to leave. Oh wait– you don’t have a garage in your coachhouse anyhoo.

“All this” for half a mil??? Does not compute.

  4. It looks like there’s a car parked right behind the main/front house on the lawn. Maybe they (the front house) somehow got an attached garage in… That coach house is huuuge though.

  5. Holy McMansions! That is not what I expected in Knewood/HP. If I did not know better I would have guessed that it looked like some areas of the north shore.

The good news is that with this place the driveway issue is no big deal. Sell it to a horse owner. They can convert the bottom floor into a carriage and giddy up on over to pick up Sasha and Maila when they are in town.

    Hi ho silver!

Cool place! With some added $$$$ it could be a neat place to live. Seems pretty expensive for an unfinished artist’s shell, rundown home, and limited land area. If it were in LP or Lakeview there are a few people that would line up with offers.
