The Lincoln Park Contemporary Is Back on the Market and Reduced: 838 W. Webster

We last chattered about this 5-bedroom contemporary house at 838 W. Webster in September 2010.

838-w-webster-approved.jpg

See our prior chatter here.

It was withdrawn from the market in January 2010 but has now returned and has been reduced $550,000.

If you remember, the house is an AIA design interior architecture award winner.

Built in 2004 on an oversized 48×115 lot, the living room has 20 foot high ceilings and a wall of windows which opens onto the 22×40 courtyard.

In all, the house has 2400 square feet of outdoor space in 7 locations.

The finishes are what you would expect from a luxury home.

There is a Poliform kitchen with stainless steel appliances and black granite counter tops.

The house also has a rare attached 3-car garage which is accessed through the kitchen.

With the upper bracket market showing some signs of life (a $4+ million single family home just sold in Lincoln Park last week), will this home now find a buyer?

Millie Rosenbloom at Baird & Warner now has the listing. See the pictures here.

  3. If this sells above 4 million than it’s a better tax rate than what I pay.

  4. Sweet place but have to ask – what kind of job allows your to spend $4 million on a home like this?

  5. One would have to be uber wealthy for this…like 40 million plus and single. ANd if you were that rich why would you live west of Halsted? Whoever built this 1)Probably wasn’t uber wealthy enough to understand this and 2)Made a huge mistake. Awesome house though.

Bob’s right. Anyone who can afford this is not going to be upset by the fact its not zoned in Lincoln Park Elementary…they can send their kids to Parker, Latin, et. al. Its in a nice part of LP.

  14. It’s not my style, but this one is awesome. Wasn’t this house featured on a local RE TV show a few years back? I remember the side courtyard.

I feel its rare that we see the modern/contemporary look done well. I know virtually nothing about the design elements of this style, but this house certainly “feels” right. Is it fair to say that modern design, above all others, requires the use of high end materials to get the look correct? I don’t love the lower quality big box finishes we so often see, but you can get the general traditional look with products from those stores. Is there an equivalent source of affordable contemporary building products or is the only way to truly achieve the look is to go high end?

  16. why do people think this house is so beautiful. I think it is one of the ugliest eyesores out there (exterior – wise). Interior -wise, it is impractical. There are a lot nicer places/neighborhoods you can live for 4 million.

  18. Clio will love that 2043 Clifton sold for more than the 2006 price…and this is a better example than his Hinsdale one on the other post…

  19. That kitchen is insanely cool. Not a big fan of those uber modern-style houses and I agree with Clio for my $4million I’d probably live somewhere else (like Lake Bluff).

  20. I like the exterior but interior is not that great specially some of the bathrooms and their cabinetry reminds me of a hospital exam room.

  21. It’s a matter of personal taste. The $4m mansions in Lake Bluff feel like museums to me.

  24. Taxes are more than reasonable, no? I pay more in relative terms. Funny, I like the one on Clifton better. I know someone that recently bought a pre construction single family home in the neighborhood that was just completed. It was in this price range, but does not show up in websites like zillow and redfin. I’ve got a hunch that traditional style homes have a better chance of selling than these modern ones. This seems like some architect got bored or could find work and decided to build his vision in the middle of lincoln park.

  35. Dan, get you mind out of the gutter. Our plumber is a 70 year old grand pa and the friend who lays tiles is a 50 plus married man from Italy. He needed help translating some documents so we helped him and then his wife and him invited us for Easter so now we are friends.

I always get a kick out of the lake houses. They never used to be so expensive. In fact, the Percy home sold for the equivalent of maybe 1.2M in today’s dollars back in the 1960s. I remember checking the deed once when I had to pull an easement on one of our old properties in the “basement”…

  38. Hideous. Cold. Clinical. Maybe some “avant garde” GaGa fan can recreate their own YouTube of “Bad Romance” in that red tile bath. Blah.

The spaces feel oppressive, not warm. The facade is a sore thumb on the block. Ah well; I could never afford it, so my opinion doesn’t mean much. And even if I could? No ma’am.

This is what I like to call a “Beetlejuice” house.
