The Ultimate Bungalow Reduces: 5501 W. Cullom in Portage Park

We last chattered about this historic bungalow at 5501 W. Cullom in Portage Park in early July.

See our prior chatter and pictures here.

Since then, the house has been reduced by $75,000.

The 4-bedroom house was built in 1926 and has many special features including a lower level with a 1950s lounge, a wine cellar, a walk in meat smoker (which apparently still works) and a full shuffleboard court in the basement floor.

The house has amazing woodwork, french walnut walls and stained glass.

They don’t build them like this anymore.

  3. sweet blast from the past bungalow, if it comes with a 60’s or 70’s Cadillac convertible i am sold. my 8 tracks are itching to be played. the basement lounge phonograph is stuck on ol blues eye.

this is a great place, some awesome details, a HUGE bungalow, but i cant picture the type of buyer for this place.

am surprised a polish “contractor” didnt buy this place in 2002 and gut the whole thing.

portage park is beautiful, past and present,(sweet eye candy there too). they got a good pee wee football program there. the park and area around it is about 80% polish/czech

  5. LOL instead of being pitched as “REDUCED 75k!!” it should instead be marketed as “INCREASED 382k FROM 95 PRICE!”

We have a long way to go until bottom because some idiots did take out outsized mortgages even before the mania (525k in 2002).

Sorry dude not our fault you paid 525k for this place in 2002. You’ll be lucky to get 475k for it these days.

  8. mrsB,

The local HS for this area is Schurz unfortunatly, some say stienmentz other say Taft, i am close to positive its schurz. Any of those three actually are sub-par taft being the best of the three.

elementary school there is Portage Park Elementary, not one of the worst, but average. (average CPS is unacceptable). last time i was by there they didnt have one of those make-shift trailer park things in the playlot for the overcrowding like many schools have done over the past 10 years. so that a good sign.
also one of my buddies went to school there and says they used to have a really good art and drama program there.

It’s Schurz. Taft and LPHS are the only marginally acceptable attendance area HS, imo, at least right now.
