Vintage Greystone Exterior Hides Modern Interior: 80 E. Elm
This 1914 greystone building at 80 E. Elm in the Gold Coast exudes vintage charm on the outside.
But the interiors of this 2-bedroom unit are purely modern with a DeGuilio kitchen and Waterworks baths.
Two vintage wood burning fireplaces remain to remind you of the building’s history. There’s also a private entrance to this unit.
While the unit has central air and an in-unit washer/dryer, it doesn’t have deeded parking.
The listing describes this unit as “dreamy.”
Janice Smith at @Properties has the listing. See the pictures here.

It’s sad when people take historic vintage & ruin it with modern crap.
agreed! The “modern crap” doesn’t match the exterior at all. Is this a normal price for an appt within a greystone? Seems astronomical
Hmmm I’ll go against everyone else and say…..whatever this place is awesome and in just about the best location I could probably want. If I had 600k to blow this place would be mine.
well.. if everyone has 600k to blow.. this place will be .. *cough* .. 1.5 million. you get the point
I think it looks nice, more contemporary than modern but whatever… the price though, pretty high since eyeballing it only appears to be 1100-1200sqft. Then again this is the gold coast so it might sell fast.
I feel this place gives you a vintage appearance with all modern conveniences. Beautifully done, and who knows how it looked prior to this owner’s renovation. It could have already been stripped of a lot of its charm. I think that the exterior and elements like the original fireplaces still give you a sense of what was original, but you still get a lot of modern amenities and feautures.
It’s probably a very dark condo unit, notice that every single light has been turned on in the photos.
Impressive unit in the Gold Coast. I imagine this will sell at this price
if this house could just get rid of the vintage crap i would totally be up for it. My grandmother would love the place until she walked inside…
I think you mean get rid of the modern crap.
Love the area and lots of big fattening apple pancackes at Walkers is a plus, but why is the sq ft intentionally omitted? Tastefully decorated with the neutrals but my guess is this place is smaller than it looks.
they must have had a special on grey paint that day
Also does that place bud up against the back of the portillos drive thru right there? From that picture of the kitchen looking at the R&R MCD’s I think it does… ugh that would suck! Not just the smell but the noise from ignorant drivers and the speakers.
Dammit this was supposed to go in the 55W Erie. disregard!
“my guess is this place is smaller than it looks”
Does it look to be larger than ~1170? Get there based on:
18′ wide LR (carrying thru the whole unit)
times
65′ long (=23 (LR) + 8 (K) + 25 (2BRs) + 9 (baths/closets)=)
= 1170. Could be off by up to about 100 sf either way, but I’d be shocked if it’s less than 1100 or more than 1250.
Only 1-1/2 baths will detract somewhat from salability.
Although it has a vintage exterior, the contemporary interior does blend well.
IMO, the owners have exquisite taste in interior design…very reminiscent of a lot of NYC interiors…which (also IMO) are among the best in country. I have Waterworks fixtures as well and you can’t get much better in a contemp line. Great to finally see a featured property with immaculate staging and an agent who cared enough to take some good pictures.
