A Rare Pre-War Duplex Penthouse with 2 Terraces in East Lakeview: 3100 N. Sheridan

This 3-bedroom duplex penthouse in The Barry at 3100 N. Sheridan in East Lakeview just came on the market.

The Barry was built in 1925 and has 47 units. It’s an amenity building with a doorman and exercise room but there’s no parking.

This unit has the vintage feel of the era with modern updates.

It has tall ceilings, arched doorways, French doors and leaded glass windows in the living room.

The listing says it has a “chef’s kitchen” with a 6-burner Wolf range, Viking double oven and refrigerator and Miele dishwasher with dark counter tops and dark modern wood cabinets.

The master suite, which also has a fireplace, and a second bedroom are on the second floor.

The third bedroom is on the main level and the listing says it’s currently being used as a family room.

It has features buyers look for including a washer/dryer in the unit and space pak cooling. However, there’s no parking.

But the big selling feature has to be the two private terraces.

The first terrace is off the living room on the main floor and measures 28×11.

The master suite has the second terrace, measuring 15×5.

The unit has come on the market at more than double the 2012 sales price at $1.15 million.

Is this an opportunity for vintage lovers to get a rare New York-style duplex close to the lake?

Brad Lippitz at Compass has the listing. See the pictures here.

  1. Nice, but they must need to stand on the counter in order to get some of those copper pans down.

  2. Wonderful space, and I think parking is available next door. Still, it’s a big drawback to pay $1 mln and have no parking come along with it, despite how easily walkable this neighborhood is.

HOA is surprisingly low for such a unit. So are property taxes. Might be a deal at the current price.

PS – I played on the playground in this building in 1977, when I had a first grade friend who lived here. Haven’t been in it since.

  3. No way is this 2800sf

Property taxes will se a serious jump w/the new sales price

Needs a few more chairs in the bedrooms

Can the “Sticks” lighting trend die already.

    Still not how it works.

“a few more chairs in the bedrooms”

Must be something … interesting going on there.

  5. I love this place. A duplex! With those terraces!

    I think it’s a bit overpriced, though.

  6. Really a nice place with a bit of history. Great to have the terraces! I really like the layout, it heralds back to the time of live in help and that bedroom off of the kitchen would most probably have been the “maids quarters”. So what if property taxes go up, that’s certainly not unique to this property but true of most Chicago real estate deals today.
