A Penthouse with a 1400 Square Foot Master Suite: 120 W. Oak in the Gold Coast

This 3-bedroom duplex up penthouse at 120 W. Oak in the Gold Coast came on the market in May 2020.

Built in 2001, this building has 14 units, a garage and an elevator.

This penthouse has south and east windows and views.

It has an interesting layout with one bedroom, the living/dining rooms, the kitchen and the family room on the main floor, but the master suite was on the second floor.

And this isn’t your standard master suite.

It’s 1400 square feet with vaulted ceilings and skylights. There’s an exercise area, a custom closet, a spa bath and a separate office which could also be the second bedroom.

The kitchen has wood cabinets, luxury stainless steel appliances and what look like stone counter tops.

With everyone desperate for outside space, this penthouse could be the answer as it has 4 private south facing balconies, including 2 on each level.

The unit has a climate controlled wine room.

It has central air, washer/dryer in the unit and 2 garage parking spaces.

Originally listed in March 2018 for $1.729 million, it has been reduced $454,000 to $1.275 million.

It last sold in 2003 for $1.25 million.

Is this penthouse now a deal?

Keith Goad at BerkshireHathaway Homeservices has the listing. See the pictures here. (sorry- no floor plan)

  1. Like the square footage but man the layout is weird and the finishes are pretty dated

Do they really have a kitchen table 5′ from the dining room table or is that a photoshop?

The is no world where a drop in sink should be in a > $1MM property

$1650/in assessments and it doesn’t cover Heat/AC? on 3800st that has to be north of $1200/mo

  2. Sold in April 2001 for $1.35 million (+cpi = $1.95m)
    Sold in September 2003 for $1.25 million (+cpi = $1.73m)

    Re-listed in May 2020 for $1.275 million

    Oof.

It’s really good space, in a pretty dated looking building.

What’s going up across the alley? Can’t recall.

If you got this at $1.2MM and threw $500k into a remodel, could you get $2MM for it?

  4. “could you get $2MM for it?”

I wouldn’t want to have a $2m unit in that building. But maybe I’m narrow minded on that issue. Location is both great and meh (don’t like being on the Dave & Busters block, tho they have been trying to move).

3 other units currently for sale, including another ‘ph’:

Building is sort of funky, as it appears to be 2 mostly separate 4/5-story towers on top of a parking podium.

Featured unit appears to be all of the top floors of the south tower. 3d and 4th floor also have a-b units.

  5. Thanks for the link – makes a lot more sense now. Was trying to figure the Roof top based on the photo’s.

Could be a cool space too bad 50% of the budget would have to go to putting up a couple of Pergolas.

  6. It’s a pretty unique space with pleasant views, garage parking included, and excellent outdoor space. I’m personally a bit put off by the 2001 architectural aesthetics, but could probably live with it considering everything else this comes with. Kitchen looks pretty good to me, but I’m no appliance expert.

Probably not my choice for $1.25 million but bound to be someone’s.

  7. Great unit. Urban location. Good price per sf. Lots of natural light, open space layout with privacy too. I’d take this over the 900 W Webster property and it’s $500K cheaper!

  8. The layout is a bit suboptimal but is this a deal for the location and square footage? Absolutely.

Bring in an architect that knows what they are doing and refinish floors / kitchen / bathroom and this place could be awesome.
