A Vintage Beauty With all the Modern Amenities in Old Town: 1814 N. Lincoln Park West

This 2-bedroom at 1814 N. Lincoln Park West in Old Town came on the market in May 2018.

The building was constructed in 1890 and has 4 units.

This 1800 square foot unit is Unit #3.

It has many of its vintage features intact, including crown molding, wainscoting, pocket doors, a full size dining room, original bent glass bay windows and built-in window seats, as well as 2 gas fireplaces, one in the living room and one in the dining room.

There are marble floors in the foyer.

Originally a 3 bedroom, one of the bedrooms was used to make a master suite with a walk-in closet and a larger bathroom with a marble shower.

The kitchen has white cabinets, a Wolf stove and a Subzero refrigerator, quartz counter tops, an island and a beamed ceiling.

There’s a large private 26×20 deck off the kitchen with covered dining.

Although it’s vintage, this unit has the features today’s buyers look for including washer/dryer in the unit, space pak cooling (it has radiator heating) and an exterior parking space, which is rare for the Old Town triangle neighborhood.

Originally listed for $835,000 in May, it has been reduced $60,000 to $775,000.

Is this your dream Old Town vintage condo property?

Karen Peterson at @Properties has the listing. See the pictures here.

  1. I saw this place a few weeks ago and they did a great job with the renovations. That being said their asking price makes no sense to me. Being a 3rd floor walk up it would be a great bachelor pad but at that price point there are so many other options available. I’d be surprised if it goes for over 700k

  2. How do you watch TV? Sit on the coffee table? Lay on the floor?

TVs above the fireplace is the new glass-block wall.

  4. It is gorgeous but I wouldn’t pay that for a 2-bed although I suspect someone will…or at least close to it. Watching TV like that has got to hurt your neck after awhile.

  5. Best looking property I’ve seen on CC in a while. Light, sunny, nice vintage features, great street, great deck.

Yes, bedrooms are small, but you expect that with vintage. I would like 3 bedrooms for this price, but that’s my only quibble.

  6. Surprising price when compared to that 1818 N Lincoln property which I do think is cuter, but is also a lot smaller and on a busier street. But of course that is a rowhouse, which makes a difference.

I’d wonder why this hasn’t sold, but this one isn’t selling either, at only $540K — https://www.redfin.com/IL/Chicago/350-W-Dickens-Ave-60614/unit-2/home/13348510.

  7. The sad part about getting older (47) is that a place like this really makes no sense for my wife and me if we were to buy it for the long term after the kids move out. Climbing all those stairs is fine now, but not when we’re 70, I’m guessing. Probably our next move will be to an elevator building, though I know it sounds pathetic. I hate moving, though, and haven’t in 16 years. So if we ever sell our house, the next place is our final place (until the old-age home, I suppose, ugh).

  8. Seems like it’s for an older couple, who love stairs and also want a guest bedroom. The layout doesn’t seem family friendly. Not an eat-in kitchen.

The only thing worse than a third floor walk-up, is a fourth floor walk-up. With most third floor walk-ups, the reward is being on the top floor. Not with this one. Not for anyone with young kids or a dog.

  9. Stephanie, that unit on Dickens doesn’t have parking, which could be part of the issue. Also, hard to know about vintage unless you’re in it and see the room sizes etc.

  10. I noticed the unit right above this one sold earlier this year for $790,000. It has somewhat more stylish finishes and seems to clear the house to the south, so all the views from that side of the unit will be dramatically better. I would imagine it has the same footprint, but from the floor plan, there looks to be differences in the layout. All this adds up to what, imho, is a greater than $15,000 value for the top floor unit – except for one thing. You have to climb yet one more flight of stairs!!

  11. Vissi – great find! I think I like that one even better (because it’s 3 bedroom, not two).
