Coastal Vibes Meet Vintage Charm in East Lakeview: A 3-Bedroom at 444 W. Oakdale

This 3-bedroom in 444 W. Oakdale in East Lakeview came on the market in June 2023. Sorry, I don’t have a picture of this building but I wanted to crib on it anyway.

I can’t find a date on the building but it is vintage and has 6 units. There is outdoor parking behind the building and basement storage.

This unit was recently sold in February 2023 “as-is.” From that listing:

It has come back on the market with “coastal vibes meet vintage charm.”

The unit still has some of its vintage features including crown molding, a foyer, a separate dining room and millwork in the living and dining rooms.

There are hardwood floors throughout (originals?) and new arched doorways.

The living room has a sunroom with a bay window and an art deco chandelier along with vintage sconces and a “statement” electric fireplace with lime wash paint finish surround and built-ins.

The dining room has custom built-ins with a beverage refrigerator.

The kitchen has been gutted and now has cream cabinets with gold pulls, 2 pantry cabinets, veined quartz countertops, and a full quartz backsplash.

The listing says primary bedroom fits a king bed but like the original sale earlier this year, it still has a shared bath with the second bedroom. That bathroom has a walk-in-shower and a double vanity sink.

There’s a second bathroom that has a air jet tub, French Gold Kohler fixtures, custom green vanity with quartz top and pink tile surround in the bathtub.

There’s an office off the kitchen.

It also has some painted exposed brick walls.

This unit has the features buyers look for, which are rare in vintage units, including central air, washer/dryer in the unit and one outdoor on-site parking space.

But for those dog lovers, you’re out of luck. Still no dogs allowed.

There is also no outdoor space with this unit.

This building is in the Nettlehorst school district, is near the shops and restaurants of East Lakeview, is near several grocery stores and multiple bus lines as well as Lincoln Park and the lake front.

The February 2023 listing said this unit was rarely available. It was the first resale since at least 1990.

The unit sold in February 2023 for $417,500. It is listed for $332,500 more, at $750,000.

    Not my style but the reno seems well done and the built-in fits vs the typical throw it together schlock

    At this price point are Trixie & Chad going to be able to live without a MBa & WIC?

    Unit is about 100′ long, and at no point is it 24′ wide. It’s probably a little short of 2000.

    Stacked w/d with the middle controls, in the wild.

    It’s nice, but I have trouble with the layout–don’t like the bathtub basically in the kitchen.

    Some compromises on room sizes, and trade the rear sunroom for a porch, but I think more livable.

    Layout is def better and has a MBa

    One thing on the subject property, it looks like someone added floor registers electronically or I havent seen that style before.

  9. No one is going to mention the toilet that’s two steps from the kitchen? I’d have a hard time settling for that in a condo half the price.

    Seems they would have been better off making the back bedroom / bathroom an en suite, rather than having a bathroom adjoined to the kitchen.

    Aren’t most half baths in newer high rises two steps from the kitchen?

    as to making it an en suite–then guests are either walking thru that bedroom, or using the ‘master’ bath.

    No good compromise without find space (and plumbing) for another half bath.

    There is another bathroom in the halllway.

  15. Love what they did with the floors and the arches added in several locations.

    I’m a fan of the pink guest bathroom tile but I’m sure it won’t appeal to everyone. But they went for it instead of just putting in boring white.

    There’s so little inventory on the market, if you can get a good price on an estate sale or a long-time owner who just wants to sell, they can be renovated and flipped for a nice profit.

    The key thing for this unit is that they didn’t move walls or plumbing so costs would be lower on the renovation.

    It’s still the ‘master’; making that the guest bath is a significant compromise at the price.

    and then laundry goes to where? Does appear that level below it is not another unit, so should have access to plumb a toilet.

  19. Lovely place even if I’m not a fan of their decorating. Only a couple issues: Lack of outdoor space and the fact it’s a six-flat, meaning having to cooperate with the five other owners to manage renovations and repairs. Also, I’m not a fan of exposed brick walls, but maybe I’m in the minority.

    I’m a cat person, so no dogs being allowed is a plus.

    Not sure what was done to unit to allow a $300,000 price hike, but I assume it was major. This is now on the pricey side for the area and type of building.
