The building was constructed in 1963 and has 942 units.

It’s a full amenity building with an indoor half basketball court, ping pong, a pool table, what looks like a library, a kids playroom, a hot tub and a large exercise room.

This one bedroom has the coveted south facing balcony overlooking Maggie Daley Park, Millennium Park, Grant Park and the Chicago skyline.

The listing says it’s “all new.”

It has beech hardwood flooring throughout.

The kitchen has white cabinets and a stone island along with stainless steel appliances.

It has central air, but there’s no washer/dryer in the unit. It is coin laundry in the building.

Rental parking is $200 a month.

The assessment covers all of the building’s amenities including the bubble indoor pool.

Is this the best indoor pool in all of Chicago?

And is this unit, at just $480,000, a cheaper way than nearby, newer buildings to get the south facing view that is in demand?

    no.. the hancock’s pool is way better, I’m sure there are others especially with all the new construction lately, also pretty much every luxury hotel has a nicer indoor pool

  2. Does anyone else remember before they re-routed LSD? It used to run just to the west of this building and you could see into the “bubble pool” as you drove past.

    Off the topic of this property – are things heating up out there? There are 6 properties under contract within a few blocks of me that went on the market either March 4 or March 11…

  3. Great building…( I rented a unit years ago and they have had massive improvements since then…) and the 07 tier is considered prime. I wish that I had bought in at that time.

    I don’t know about best pool but it is “iconic,” and there is nothing like swimming there when the snow is falling.

  4. Reminds me of the Marriott O’Hare pool. My grandparents used to rent several rooms there on a weekend in April and invite all the grandkids to swim. Similar glass structure but you could swim under a bridge into the outdoor pool. That was cool as a kid but it was covered with blue plastic balls to keep in the heat. Those were removed after a kid drown in the pool.

    Later in the day we would all eat dinner at a Hawaiian themed restaurant in the hotel. Anyone remember the name of that place?

    Well- the Hancock was built just a few years after this building. Maybe the 60s was the decade of indoor pools.

    Have you ever been in the new buildings sonies? They’re all pretty lacking in the pool department. The pools tend to be small and kind of an after thought. Although, some of the new apartment buildings seem to be doing a better job in the pool department.

    I should do a week of posts just on the buildings with the best pools. I have my favorites but I’m sure there are some “secret” ones out there too.

    Yes- it’s really hot with the caveat that properties that are updated are selling quickly. Also, if they’re under $1 million.

    I’ve thought about posting on some properties and, alas, they are under contract before I get the chance.

  8. Picture #40 scared the hell out of me. That wasn’t necessary. However, this pool is great, but I couldn’t say it was the best. One thing I am impressed with is all the amenities like a library, a kids room, the nice pool, the billiards room, etc. This place seems really inclusive and well managed. Something for everyone. Well done.

  9. I’ve been in the pool here in winter too – it was pretty nice being inside with the cold outside. It looked like at one time it was a massive 60’s luxe Vegas style health club with steam rooms and all. I think it has been redone since I was there (pre-2010 iirc). And yeah, I loved going by it on before the S curve was straightened.

  12. Had a friend whose parents lived here after becoming empty nesters and loved it.
    Bit distant for walking to central business district on a cold day but a short cab ride to most things.

    They have a small bus that takes the residents into the biz district, etc. Back in the day, that buss would be filled with walkers and canes with the elderly residents who first bought in the building in the 60s and 70s.

  15. I remember before they straightened the “S” curve and Lake Shore Drive went directly by that pool. As a kid, I always wanted to go in and see it. Still looks pretty nice in a mid-century way now.

    The unit itself seems generic, but nice views. Pretty pricey for just 1 BR. Amenities are nice. What I also wonder about is the isolation of this area from the rest of the city. Doesn’t seem very walkable.

  16. I don’t think it’s isolated anymore – the sidewalks in Lakeshore East are usually bustling – at least along Randolph. Not like it was when it was built and you had only had one other building and had to cross both directions of Lake Shore Drive to get to Michigan Avenue.

  17. Good point, FG. I forgot about that. But is there a grocery store anywhere near? Everywhere you can walk from there is touristy. Not sure how much the retail caters to residents, but I haven’t walked east from Michigan in a while.

    Iirc Mariano’s is a block west on Benton & there’s a Bockwinkel’s 1/2 block east in Harbor Point

    Nothing in/around the LSE park is touristy. Dog Park, most expensive private school in Chicago, Subway, etc.

  20. Yup, I was beat to mentioning the Mariano’s. Plus a bunch of restaurants patronized by locals (at my friends who live back there go to them regularly, as do their neighbors).
