Vintage on the Front But Modern on the Back: A SFH at 1935 W. Schiller

This 5-bedroom single family home at 1935 W. Schiller in Wicker Park came on the market in April 2019.

Built in 1886, the house is on an extended Chicago lot which measures 25×162. It has a 2.5 car garage and is set directly on Wicker Park.

The listing says its in the landmark historic district.

But this isn’t your typical vintage home renovation.

While the home looks vintage on the front, an entirely new modern addition has been put on the back.

Some of the vintage features were preserved including 2 of the original fireplace mantels: one in the salon and one in the master bedroom along with wainscoting and crown molding.

But there is now a modern contemporary kitchen with white and dark brown (or are those black?) cabinets and upscale stainless steel appliances.

The house also has a wall of windows facing the back yard which the listing says employs passive solar design which takes advantage of the southern light.

The master bedroom is on the second floor along with a study and library (which I think is the small room with the couch and bookcases.)

3 of the bedrooms are on the third floor along with a great room and skylights.

The fifth bedroom is in the basement which also has a recreation room.

The house has central air.

Originally listed at $3.55 million, it has been reduced to $2.995 million.

Is this home the perfect combination of vintage and modern?

Stephen Hnatow at Keller Williams has the listing. See the pictures here.

Want to Live Near the Villa District? A 5-Bedroom SFH at 3635 N. Hamlin in Irving Park

This 5-bedroom single family home at 3635 N. Hamlin in Irving Park came on the market in May 2019.

While on the map it appears to be in the Villa District, a historic neighborhood, this house is on the east side of the street which is filled with homes built in the last decade.

So I’m not sure it’s technically in the Villa District (but I’m sure someone on this blog will inform us all).

From public records, it looks like those lots were purchased in 2006 for $5.5 million.

This house was built in 2011 on a standard Chicago lot of 25×125. It has a 2-car garage.

The listing says the house has had extensive upgrades including hardwood floors throughout including on the second floor and stairwells.

The kitchen has dark wood cabinets, granite counter tops, including on the island, and stainless steel appliances and is open to the family room which has custom built-ins and opens to the rear deck.

3 out of the 5 bedrooms are on the second floor, including the master suite which has a 12×10 bathroom and 2 walk-in closets.

The laundry room is also on the second floor.

The finished basement has the remaining two bedrooms and a full bath along with a recreation room.

This house is near public transportation including the Blue line at Addison which is just a few blocks away.

Originally listed at $739,000 it has been reduced to $725,000.

Is it the best of both worlds to have a newer build home this close to a historic neighborhood?

Thomas Brandt at Keller Williams Realty Partners has the listing. See the pictures here.

Live a Fairy Tale Life in the Kedvale Castle: 4215 N. Kedvale in Irving Park

This 1-bedroom in the Kedvale Castle at 4215 N. Kedvale in Irving Park came on the market in July 2019.

Best I can tell, this building was constructed in 1928 and has 38 units and no parking.

It is called the “Kedvale Castle” by the locals due to, well, it looking like a castle.

This building was apartments up until the housing bubble when it was converted into condos in 2005-2006.

This unit is a garden unit which looks to be at street level.

It has fairy tale arched windows and arched doorways throughout.

The listing says it has a “brand new” kitchen with white cabinets, white counter tops and stainless steel appliances.

The vintage bathroom (the green tile looks to be original as other units also have it) has a new vanity.

The unit has assigned storage and bike storage in the basement.

There’s no central air, just a window unit.

There’s laundry in the building.

This building is in a great location for commuting on either the blue line or the metra, which are just about 3 blocks away.

This unit is listed at $135,000, which is just $2,000 under the 2005 housing boom sales price.

But with mortgage rates lower than 2005, and rents higher, is this a good starter apartment for a first time buyer?

Tanice Forte at d’aprile properties has the listing. See the pictures here.

It has 2 gas fireplaces and 2 terraces along with 5 Juliet balconies with French doors.

3 of the 4 bedrooms are on the third floor with the fourth on the main floor.

It’s a corner unit with several walls of big, industrial windows.

The listing describes the kitchen as a “chef’s kitchen” with stainless steel appliances, dark wood cabinets and stone counter tops.

The 3 bedrooms have full height walls and it appears that two of them have windows, including the master suite.
